American Healthcare: Caught in a Bad Romance

February 4th, 2010

Putting together the newsletter, I found a post by Ian Morrison with the above title on THCB. Best excerpts below.

I want your Ugly. I want your Disease
I want your Everything, as long as it’s Free.

—America’s leading contemporary philosopher, Stefani Germanotta (aka Lady Gaga)

Insight comes from unlikely sources. Lady Gaga nailed the health reform dilemma. We have a healthcare delivery system that is an orgy of profligacy and excess that offers the false promise of making ugliness, disease and death all optional. And, we the public love all of it, as long as it’s free, at least to us as individuals.

And later:

Doesn’t the premium come out of my pocket as taxpayer, employee or individual? How can I have everything, as long as it’s free?

Short answer is: you can’t.

We are caught in a Bad Romance with healthcare.

doin’ pretty good as far as geniuses go

February 4th, 2010

Moving camera from pocket to pocket on my ride.

Feeling out of place and like everything is volatile when I’m not and nothing is. QQ moar.

I need to get back to being unfazeable. That was good times. Everyone also told me I was an unfeeling robot. Imagine me doing that thing where you are mime-weighing two items in your hands making a face like, “shrug”. That’s what I’m doing in my mind.

Road down to Bay Ridge with the Pake on my back after Google lied to me about where the shop was. Back at 47th, got the fork/stem/bars slapped on. She’s coming together.

Met up with CST in Manhattan. Hunted for dresses. Hunted for vegan-friendly foodness. Found myself two new coats, free drinks, and an invitation to The Box for more libations.
Too much city, too tired, next time.

an addendum of sorts

Sally Hansen 28: Black Out

There was no point in spoiling my last post with needless words.

I picked up the l.e. purple Pake for this chick I know for this day that is coming up. It needed to be done. [Redacted] was too far away to wait to start building, and I needed an excuse. This thing is going to be coveted.

Bike nerds: afaik the purple Pake is the only one keeping the curved, lugged fork. They’re going straight blade with all of the new forks / color options.

Also bike nerds: the logos come thoughtfully slapped on over the clear coat. I love you, Pake.
I love you for this.

After using one a razor blade to strip half of the Mercier’s many logos, I have a newfound appreciation for Pake’s approach to decals. I went with the razorblade-then-polish option. Things turned out alright, all things considered.

Clicking this link will take you to a picture of William and his mohawk on the subway.

i talked to tim today

January 29th, 2010

And by “Tim” I mean “Real Tim”

  • Tim Wood: You are actually sort of like a bear
  • Tim Wood: coming out of long periods of hibernation with a lumbering determination to munch on whatever happens to be around
  • Tim Wood: being hairy
  • Tim Wood: cuddly yet feared and respected

it’s alive

Also hideous and incomplete. But it’s up. Comments, searching, tags, photostream. I’m going to try to get everything up and archived in a week. We’ll see how that goes.

I can live with it being a little haggard for awhile.

Related: Ericat is letting me borrow her S860 until I procure a replacement for the Rebel. It fits in my pocket and takes pictures as above. I am full of glee. Glee.

Unrelated: Someone buy this Fendi wallet. Its dust bag is just gathering dust.

my other package is in transit to parsippany, new jersey

January 26th, 2010

Para-related: M’s post about the banning of D&D by the WDC

2010 is the year WordPress takes an open source plunge.

The USPS is on my shit list. Long story short: they lost a package somewhere along the way, and no one is interested in helping me figure out what happened. I’ve spent the last two days on the phone with/being ignored by post office personel. Tomorrow: more of the same.

I might switch back to Songbird again. The newest release is fairly ballin. The memory imprint of Songbird is 7x that of iTunes with a 28k song library. Unacceptable!

As of yesterday, I’m using start.io again. Netvibes was too cumbersome, and I was using it workflow-wise the same way I use start.io – as an update notifier rather than an aggregator. You can finally enter feeds manually, and they have some slick new styles to try out. For anyone who reads articles on-site instead of in a feed reader, check it out.

Today was: getting paid / working.

Tonight is: Pushing Daisies near the casket factory.

maybe in the way that oso de la fez is a familiar

The Hourly Comic – Why aren’t you reading it?

Picked up a Merkur safety razor this weekend. Attacked my face with it. Lost a pint of blood. Made Erica fix my skin with vitamin e. Once my skin isn’t on fire anymore, I’ll head back in for round two. It’s kind of nice to have a smooth face for once.

At least I know I’m not at too much of a disadvantage:

  • fordmadoxfraud: yeah, I don’t think dead dad is much of a hindrance
  • fordmadoxfraud: when it comes to shaving

threebyfive is going through a bit of a design overhaul. Baby step by baby step. I also have a whole new slew of people to figure out how to “draw” now that I’m 3×5ing in Crooklyn. It’ll be a triumph since I can barely draw myself consistently.

Quasirelated:
Given the last two QC strips, I feel more and more like I’m dating Hanners. #dreamcometrue

This weekend, for no particular reason, felt good.
